Since their successful premiere on January 25 of last year at the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Fabián Panisello’s Les Rois Mages [en la foto] have not stopped. The audiovisual show – or rather, multimedia musical theater – by the Argentine composer and conductor passed through Nice on December 4, 2019 and has visited the Berlin Konzerthaus last February 9. On May 16 it will be in Tel Aviv (Museum of Art) and in December it will arrive in Vienna (Neue Oper Wien). It is not often that contemporary music titles have such a long life after their premiere, so the repercussion that Les Rois Mages is having is undoubtedly good news.
Les Rois Mages is based on the novel of the same name by Michel Tournier, who reinterpreted the story of the Magi with a contemporary sensibility. On Tournier’s text, Gilles Rico has constructed a libretto to which Panisello has set to music with the complicity of the video artist Étienne Guiol, the astronomer Mathias Jäger and with the contribution of the sound engineer Camille Giuglaris and the computer realization of Alex Baskind and Mónica Gil Giraldo.
As Panisello explains, “In Les Rois MagesIn this way, language, video and music establish a continuous and integrated relationship with each other, where different ways of using the text (recited, sung, spoken, whispered, etc.) are used, Sprechgesangetc.) come together organically with the instrumental music, the electroacoustic component, the video and the theatrical action.” The visual part includes an animation video with drawings of the Magi and images of the universe, along with electroacoustic reconstruction of sounds from the universe. The work was commissioned by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid through its Centro Superior de Investigación y Promoción de la Música (CSIPM).
